Know the rules first

Where dogs can (and can’t) swim.

• State park swim beaches: Dogs are prohibited on any designated swimming or water-ski beach at Colorado state parks — that’s statewide regulation, not park-by-park preference.
• The big exception: Colorado’s two designated off-leash dog areas with water access are at Chatfield State Park and Cherry Creek State Park. Both require a separate dog off-leash pass (daily or annual) on top of park entry, and handlers must carry a leash and waste bags.
• Everywhere else in state parks: 6-foot leash maximum, including shorelines outside swim beaches.
• National forest creeks and lakes: Generally the most flexible option — leash rules apply in developed recreation areas; keep your dog under control everywhere. The creek footage on this site is exactly this kind of spot.

Water safety for dogs

• Blue-green algae: Colorado issues toxic algae advisories at lakes and reservoirs in late summer. It can be fatal to dogs — if water looks like pea soup or paint, stay out, and check current advisories before you go.
• Cold water: Alpine lakes and snowmelt creeks stay dangerously cold year-round. Short exposure only, and dry your dog after.
• Current: Spring runoff turns gentle creeks into fast water. If the current looks strong to you, it’s stronger for your dog.
• Drinking: Discourage drinking lake and creek water — bring fresh water and a bowl instead.
• Life jackets: For paddleboarding or boats, a dog life jacket with a handle is worth every penny — even for strong swimmers.
